MNK’s initial task was to survey all 40 schools and catalog each school into one of three primary groups: replacement of non-compliant structures with new equipment, repair of compliant structures, and identify ADA accessibility compliance for all structures. After reporting on the condition of the 40 schools, the district determined that 18 schools would receive new playground equipment and 14 would be resurfaced. MNK presented three design options to the district and principals of each school targeted for improvements. Once the principal and district selected their design option, construction documents were prepared clearly identifying the schools and the specific work to be done at each school. The construction documents were prepared as one bid package to be awarded to one contractor. The project consisted of demolishing and removing the non-compliant playground equipment, resurfacing material and preparing for installation of new compliant playground structures, and providing accessible routes. Extra precautions, such as installing temporary chain link fences around the construction area, were taken to ensure that all students were kept safe during construction. The square footage for the new playgrounds is: 51,108 and the square footage for the resurfacing are 47,733.
